The White House
This video is about President Donald Trump’s speech at the White House, Washington, DC on September 4, 2019, where he announces State Opioid Response Grants. He makes an announcement that the Department of Health and Human Services is awarding $1.8 billion in new grant money to fight the opioid epidemic. He adds that these funds will be delivered to the communities where the help is most needed.
President Trump exclaims that they have had the best year they have had in over 51 years. He says that they actually brought drug pricing down that year, which has happened first time in 51 years. He says that nothing is more important than defeating the opioid and addiction crisis. He adds that the $1.8 billion in funds they are awarding today will be distributed to all 50 states through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Donald Trump says that this fund will be used to increase access to medication and medication-assisted treatment, and mental health resources, which are critical for ending homelessness and getting people the help they deserve. He states that these grants will also support state and local governments in obtaining high-quality, comprehensive data so that they can help the most people and save the most lives.
Trump informs that in October 2017, their administration declared a nationwide public health emergency, where they directed agencies to use every resource in their arsenal to overcome the deadly plague of opioid abuse. He states that since then, they have secured a record $6 billion in new funding to respond to this emergency. He says that last year, they provided $90 million to prevent youth substance abuse, where he signed the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act, the largest-ever legislative effort to address a drug crisis in their nation’s history.
President Donald Trump reports that by the month-end, HHS will have awarded a record $9 billion to expand access to prevention, treatment, and recovery services to states and local communities during his administration. He states that they passed the CRIB Act, which allows Medicaid to help mothers and their babies, who are born physically dependent on opioids.
Trump reports that in 2018, their High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program disrupted or dismantles almost 3,000 drug trafficking organizations. He adds that during that operation, the Department of Justice seized enough fentanyl to kill over 100,000 Americans. After that, Alex Azar remarks that they are releasing the first round of $900 million in grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention led by Dr. Robert Redfield.
Alex Azar reports that their estimates suggest that in 2016, 921,000 Americans were receiving medication-assisted treatment for treating opioid addiction. He adds that in 2019, their estimates suggest that they have 1.27 million Americans receiving this treatment, a 38 percent increase. After that, Brett Giroir reports that deaths are down 5 percent in 2018 as compared to 2017.
On Hurricane, Trump says that they have almost eight helicopters between six and eight. He adds that they are over there in a very big way with the Coast Guard. He says that they are also very much helping the government of the Bahamas.
Another reporter asks Trump whether Walmart is making a smart decision by discontinuing sales of certain ammo after the recent shootings. Donald Trump says that’s up to Walmart as they are very smart and had a tremendous quarter. A reporter asks Trump whether they will get backlash from the NRA. Trump says that maybe, it’s all right. He says that he respects the NRA greatly.
On the Taliban, the reporter asks if he is ready to sign the peace deal with the Taliban anytime. Trump says that they are going to be talking to them. Another reporter asks if China decided to close down the South China Sea, what the United States could do about it. Donald Trump says that he does not want to talk about that. He adds that they have a lot of very strong allies and they are spending a lot of money to help Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines.
